Nova

Meet Nova, a 3-4yo pony who arrived at Dove Creek in June of this year. Her name was chosen for her because it means “new”, and also refers to a star that suddenly becomes brighter, symbolizing a fresh start; Nova.

We received a call in early April from a gentleman asking if we could take a filly that was left in a pasture with cows he had purchased. He had taken the filly and was trying to help her recover from malnutrition and a horrible abscess, but due to the expense and needing to leave town, he could no longer care for her. He was to deliver the filly and surrender her on April 11th, and we did not hear back from him; he would not respond to any of our efforts to reach out. In late May, we were contacted by family members informing us that the filly was still in feeble health and inquired about our availability for her care. On our way to pick her up, the owner said he did not want to surrender her, that she was doing better. Ali demanded that she come physically see that she was better upon arrival, as it was clear he had a heart for her.

After a conversation, he was willing to surrender her to us. We immediately took her to the vet for an overall evaluation. The abscess was very deep and was in danger of reaching the coffin bone. We also discovered that she is most likely a 3-4-year-old pony, after inspecting her teeth and some X-rays. She also has a very large hernia along with many embedded mats from not losing her winter coat, most likely from parasites. Weighing only 338 lbs, our main goal is to get her healthy enough to undergo the surgery needed for the hernia and properly care for and treat the abscess. She has shown a good deal of progress since arriving.

Nova is very true to her name, very kind, loving, and gentle. She has a long road ahead of her so please consider becoming her monthly sponsor today!
